The timing belt — often called the cambelt — keeps the top and bottom of your engine turning in step. On many engines, if the belt snaps, the valves and pistons collide, which can mean a very expensive repair or even a replacement engine. When should my cambelt be changed?

Every manufacturer sets its own interval, based on both mileage and age — whichever comes first. A car that does few miles still needs its belt changed on time, because the rubber ages. What we replace

We usually replace the belt together with its tensioner and idler pulleys, as these wear alongside it. On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt, so it often makes sense to change it at the same time rather than pay for the labour twice — we will tell you if that applies to your car and include it in the quote.

Timing chains

Some engines use a timing chain instead of a belt. Chains are designed to last much longer but can stretch or wear their guides and tensioners, often showing up as a rattle on start-up or a warning light. We replace timing chains too, and can diagnose a chain-related fault code.
