Mechanic working under a car on the lift during a clutch job in Scarborough

The clutch connects your engine to the gearbox, and like brake pads it wears a little every time you use it. How long it lasts depends on the car and the driving — lots of town traffic, hill starts and short trips wear a clutch faster than open-road miles. When it starts to go, it rarely gets better on its own.

Signs your clutch needs replacing

  • Slipping — the revs rise but the car doesn't speed up to match, often in higher gears or going uphill
  • Biting point high — the clutch only engages right at the top of the pedal travel
  • Juddering when pulling away
  • Heavy or spongy pedal, or a pedal that sticks
  • Difficulty selecting gears, or crunching when changing
  • Noise — a whirr or rumble when the pedal is pressed or released
  • A burning smell after heavy use

What a clutch replacement involves

To reach the clutch, the gearbox has to come out, which is why it is a labour-heavy job. We usually fit a complete clutch kit (friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing) so all the wearing parts are new together. While the gearbox is out we check the flywheel; some cars, especially diesels, have a dual-mass flywheel that can also wear. If it needs replacing, we will tell you and include it in the quote before carrying on.

Clutch repairs for cars and vans

We replace clutches on everyday cars, 4x4s and vans and commercial vehicles. If your gearbox itself is the problem rather than the clutch, gearbox and transmission work can be carried out here or can be arranged by appointment, depending on your vehicle.

How much is a clutch replacement in Scarborough?

The price depends on the vehicle — how easy the gearbox is to remove and whether the flywheel needs replacing too. Tell us the make, model and engine and we will give you a clear, free quote. Pay monthly finance is available on repairs, subject to status, and our work carries a 3-month warranty.

Questions

Clutch Replacement: Your Questions Answered

How do I know if my clutch is going?

Common signs are slipping (revs rising without the car speeding up), a high biting point, juddering when pulling away, a heavy or spongy pedal, noise when pressing the pedal, and difficulty selecting gears.

How long does a clutch replacement take?

It varies by vehicle — many cars can be done in a day, but some take longer. We'll give you a realistic timescale with your free quote.

Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?

It usually gets worse, and a clutch that fails completely can leave you stranded. It is best to get it checked as soon as you can.

Do I need a new flywheel with my clutch?

Not always. We check the flywheel while the gearbox is out and only recommend replacing it if it is worn, telling you before we go ahead.

Can I spread the cost of a new clutch?

Yes — pay monthly finance is available on repairs, subject to status. Ask when you get your quote.
